I received several requests for my mom's Black-eyed Peas recipe. So I called her and here it is. Eat up!
Mama's New Years Black-Eyed Peas Recipe
Ingredients:
- (1) large bag of dried black-eyed peas (you can find these on the rice aisle in the grocery store).
- (2) Ham hocks and a small piece of hog jowl (or you can substitute (2) smoked turkey neckbones).
- Seasoned Salt
- Pepper
Directions:
Put a strainer or collander inside of a large bowl.
Empty the bag of dried black-eyed peas into the bowl and liberally cover them with hot tap water.
Let the peas soak for at least (1) hour.
While the peas are soaking you should be boiling your meat as follows:
Rinse the ham hocks and hog jowl in cold water.
Place the meat in the bottom of a large pot and add some seasoned salt and pepper.
Add enough water to the pot to cover the meat completely. Then add an extra 1 1/2 to 2 cups of water.
Boil on High heat for 45min-1hr with the top on the pot.
NOTE: After boiling for 45min-1hr, there should still be enough water left in the pot to completely cover the meat but not much more.
Lift the colander out of the bowl to strain the blackeyed peas.
Pour the peas into the boiling pot.
Reduce the heat to medium and return the pot to a boil.
Continue to boil the peas for about 35min on medium heat.
Remove the pot from the heat.
Stir the peas lightly using a large spoon (don't stir too hard to avoid making them mushy).
Let the peas sit for 10 min.
Use a large slotted spoon to fish the ham hocks and jowls out of the pot and place them onto a plate.
Dice the meat up with a fork and knife and return it (along with the bones) to the pot.
Gently stir the the meat pieces back into the peas.
Put the top back on the pot and you're done.
Add a pot of rice and some cornbread and you'll be eating good for days.
Enjoy!
